It is now time to be an obnoxious blogger and backtrack over the last 6 months of our super exciting lives with a million posts! Lots of good stuff has been happening around here and it would be a shame to ignore it all. So, back to May.
Bubba completed his year of preschool. The preschool he went to always has an end of year picnic at the same park. When Cakes had her party there I was at the orthodontist with my mom waiting to be called back for my wisdom teeth removal when my phone rang. Scott is on the phone telling me that Silly fell and broke his arm (How do you know it's broken? Because his harm is bent where arms don't bend. Where is he? He's here with me in the car. Well why don't I hear him crying? He's not crying, he only cried for about 30 seconds. Where is Cakes? I left her with our friends, they'll take her home). Somewhere in the middle of that conversation, the nurse calls my name, and I have to explain to her that I have to leave, not having my wisdom teeth out today, my son is on his way to the ER. This whole scenario replays in my head every time I see that park, and going there is just weird. Anyway, I had volunteered to make dessert for the party and Bubba was watching me on Pinterest one day and saw these Chocolate Chip Cookie S'mores and wanted me to make them. Why not? They were quite a hit at the picnic.
Each of the kids got a bucket full of summer things, including squirt guns. One of the dads and I became the squirt gun fillers (I guess I do deserve my troublemaker reputations; Scott and I did the same thing at Silly's end of year party). They were having a blast though, and no one really got all the wet.
His preschool graduation ended up being rather interesting - the entire neighborhood was without power. Thankfully the church had some emergency lighting, rounded up all the candles they could find, plus the sanctuary has large windows and it was still light out. You could see all the kids, but couldn't really get any decent pictures. All the preschoolers sing a bunch of songs that they've been learning all year. I asked Bubba beforehand is he was going to sing; he told me he would sing, but he wasn't going to do any of the hand motions. That's just what he did. Even in the semi-darkness I could see his little lips moving.
This is as good as it got for pictures, him marching in with his class.
Cakes and Silly had a piano recital. I did take some actual pictures of the event, but they are all terrible! They don't mind, I'm sure. Silly and I played a duet arrangement of Ode to Joy and he played Big Chief Thundercloud for his solo. Cakes played a piece of Beethoven's 5th and we played My Heart Will Go On together.
And the best news of the whole month - Silly had a birthday! He turned 8, which in our church means he gets baptized, but that turned out to be really complicated. Scott was supposed to be going out on sea trials, but of course the date kept changing on a daily basis, and we certainly weren't going to plan it when Scott couldn't be there. And I have a really big family; I don't expect all of them to be at everything, but at the very least we had to work around my dad's schedule, because you have to make sure all the grandparents can be there. So his baptism did not take place anywhere near his birthday. Neither did his birthday party, for the same reasons. He did get to have a little party after his piano recital because Scott's parents came up for that, which meant they also brought cake and presents. Of course there was camo.
My MIL found this awesome gift bag that has a dog tag for a label. We'll be reusing that one!
Turning 8 also means he started Cub Scouts! He really started with a bang - they had their Raingutter Regatta for his second meeting. He and Scott crafted quite a masterpiece, and he won the whole darn thing!
The month ended with an awesome surprise when my favorite person in the whole world asked if we had any plans for Memorial day, and if not, could her family of 6 come visit. Um, yes! If I'd already had plans I would have canceled them for that! I visited her last October before she had knee surgery, but our kids haven't been together in way too long. I just love seeing them together.
We managed to wrangle her 4, my 3, and 2 out of 3 of another friend's girls for a picture before they went back to NC. Us grownups spent lots of time talking and the kids spent lots of time playing. Doesn't get much better than that.
I love Cakes in that silly picture; she's looking at everyone else like there is something seriously wrong with them.
